Arsenal’s deal with Declan Rice has implications on a Chelsea move for a high-class midfielder of their own, with an eye-watering new transfer fee coming to light.
The Gunners have reached a ‘full agreement’ with West Ham over the transfer of Declan Rice, per the Athletic’s David Ornstein.
The Hammers will receive an initial £100m with a further £5m earmarked for future add-ons. Arsenal initially hoped to pay the £100m fixed fee over four years, though settled on making their payments inside two years.
A medical has been scheduled and Arsenal are free to finalise personal terms with the 24-year-old. Once the move crosses the line, Rice will become the most expensive British player of all time.
Now, according to the Telegraph, Rice’s blockbuster move to Arsenal is having an impact on Chelsea’s pursuit of Moises Caicedo.
The Brighton and Ecuador ace, 21, was courted by both Arsenal and Chelsea in January. Brighton refused to entertain a mid-season sale, with Caicedo ultimately going on to sign a contract extension a month after the winter window closed on March 3.
However, that always looked a simple case of Brighton protecting their investment and it was inevitable a summer move would be explored.
The biggest bid for Caicedo in January totalled £70m, per the Telegraph. However, according to their update, Brighton will now demand upwards of £100m having seen the fee Rice is moving for.
Caicedo and Rice play in the same position and are both Premier League-proven. What’s more, Caicedo is actually three years younger than Rice – something that will embolden Brighton to demand a nine-figure sum from Chelsea.
The Blues want Caicedo to partner Enzo Fernandez who also cost north of £100m. Per Fabrizio Romano, direct club-to-club talks are currently taking place between Brighton and Chelsea and the move is “concrete” behind the scenes despite a lack of recent updates in the media.
But given Arsenal’s colossal outlay on Rice, Brighton will now demand a similar if not even higher sum for Caicedo. But for Arsenal’s deal, Chelsea may well have been able to snare Caicedo for £20m-£30m less than what he’ll now cost.
The upped price tag isn’t likely to deter Chelsea given their increasingly desperate need for new midfielders.
Indeed, Ruben Loftus-Cheek (AC Milan), N’Golo Kante (Al Ittihad), Mateo Kovacic (Man City) and Mason Mount (Man Utd) have all departed so far this summer.
At present, Mauricio Pochettino’s only established central midfield stars are Fernandez and Conor Gallagher. Clearly, at least one new addition is required.
