New Arsenal signing Kai Havertz has been the subject of intense social media ridicule after he failed to get to grips with the MLS All-Star skills challenge.

The Germany international left the Gunners’ London rivals Chelsea after three years at Stamford Bridge, with Mikel Arteta willing to fork out £65million to bring Havertz to the Emirates this summer. However, with such a price tag comes intense scrutiny and the forward is already the topic of much discussion after a dismal display out in the United States.

The 24-year-old was one of a selected group of Arsenal players chosen to take part in an array of skill games, but his performance in the cross and volley challenge may spark concern among the Gunners faithful.

The task sees Havertz’s team-mates whip in a number of crosses, with the former Blues star expected to control the ball before finishing comfortably and guiding his efforts into the back of the net.

Instead, Havertz managed to miss every single attempt on goal. Some came close, forcing the goalkeeper into a save or striking the frame of the goal, while others flew high and wide. In turn, the Champions League winner became the first player in the history of the challenge to fail to score a single point.

This has done very little to ease fears that Havertz will underwhelm at the Emirates. He struggled to get to grips with life at Chelsea and as a result, many were left stunned by his mega-money move to Arsenal earlier this summer.

The MLS All-Stars ended up winning that round comfortably, but the Gunners came out on top in both the penalty challenge and the passing round, with Jorginho showing why he is so highly rated by boss Arteta.

Arteta’s side will play the MLS All-Stars in an 11-a-side fixture at 1:30am GMT on Thursday, 20 July. The game could be the first time Gunners fans see record signing Declan Rice get minutes in an Arsenal shirt, while Havertz could be handed his first start for the club.

The German has already had one run out for his new side during Arsenal’s 1-1 draw against FC Nurnberg earlier this month, but was only introduced at half-time and struggled to weave his influence in the second half of the game.

Arsenal also have fixtures against both Manchester United and Barcelona coming up as part of their pre-season tour of the U.S. before a return to London for another friendly against Monaco and the Community Shield against Manchester City under the iconic Wembley arch in early August.
