Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta shows why he signed Timber and Havertz in friendly win
Ozil at his peak was one of the best attacking midfielders in the Premier League. But the German had far too many off days in an Arsenal shirt.

His last game for the Gunners was in March 2020, before the break caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. He didn’t leave until the following January but was not part of Arteta’s plans upon the resumption of top-flight action.

Ozil’s work ethic was often questioned by pundits, who commonly called him lazy. Chelsea fan Cundy followed Havertz closely during his three years at Stamford Bridge and says there are unfortunate similarities to the former World Cup winner.

CBS New York shares tribute to Elise Finch

He said on talkSPORT: “When the going gets tough, he went missing. That’s the truth. But of course, the managerial change, he came under Frank [Lampard], the first game he ever played he played at Brighton away and he played on the right hand side and he looked lost. It wasn’t his best position.

“He reminded me a lot of Ozil. When I say Ozil, I’m talking about Ozil when he goes missing, that languid, lazy, stroll type of player. He reminds me of Ozil and that was not a compliment, it’s not a compliment.”

Arsenal made Havertz their first signing of the summer in a surprise £65million deal. Cundy says Arteta must find the 24-year-old’s best position in order for him to fulfil his potential.

He added: “I’m going to defend Kai a little bit here because he’s not a No 9. He scored the winning goal in the Champions League final, he can do a job, but you’re not going to get the best out of him.

“I don’t know what Kai Havertz’s best position is. It’s not a No 9, it’s not out wide, although he did play out wide in the Bundesliga. I think he needs to play off someone or a false nine where he can drift in, maybe play off [Gabriel] Jesus in there.”

Havertz scored his first goal in an Arsenal shirt in the 5-0 friendly win over MLS All-Stars in the early hours of Thursday morning. Arteta hailed his versatility as one of the key reasons for signing him after the game.

The Spaniard said: “I think, again, it’s one of the main qualities he has. He gives us something very different with his quality and size as well, when you have to beat the press for example and use him as a target man.

“So, we will see – for now, he’s playing in the attacking midfield position, but I’m sure throughout the season and throughout games as well, we’re going to have the options to play him in different positions.”
