Guardiola reveals next move for Cancelo as Arsenal prepares to make official bid

Since Mikel Arteta became the new head coach at Arsenal in 2019, there has been a number of resemblances of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

The Spaniard’s ideology in tactics has much been a product of his three-and-a-half years working under Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium. Arteta has continued to develop his own brand of coaching, but there has continued to be links with their Premier League rivals.

Last summer, Arteta raided his former employers to sign Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus for £77million combined. The duo has made 69 appearances between them for Man City in the 2021/22 season, helping them pip Liverpool to the Premier League title on the final day of the season.

At the time, the arrivals of Jesus and Zinchenko were viewed as incredible business. Fast forward a year and they are key players in Arteta’s squad. Zinchenko made 33 appearances in all competitions for the Gunners whilst Jesus’ debut campaign in north London saw him provide 19 goal contributions, despite missing three months due to injury.

The impact of Jesus and Zinchenko did come close to haunting Guardiola and City, with Arsenal leading the way at the top of the table for the majority of the season. Unfortunately for the Gunners, it wasn’t meant to be and City won their fifth title in six years.

Yet this summer, Arsenal have once again showed interest in a number of Man City players. Ilkay Gundogan was said to be on Arteta’s radar as a short-term replacement for Granit Xhaka but he joined Barcelona instead. The future of Joao Cancelo has been unclear for some time, with the Gunners keen.

A new right-back is said to still be on Edu Gaspar’s list this summer after already spending over £200million on Declan Rice, Jurrien Timber and Kai Havertz. Cancelo’s versatility makes him an attractive asset for Arteta, with Guardiola’s relationship with the Portugal international said to be fractured.

However, according to The Sun, Man City want to keep Cancelo for the new season after the 29-year-old’s attitude during pre-season. The report suggests that Guardiola has been impressed with Cancelo’s ‘attitude and humility on tour’.
