Eddie Nketiah has spoken about the honour of wearing the Arsenal captain’s armband during Wednesday’s Emirates Cup clash against Monaco.
The Gunners trailed 1-0 after Youssouf Fofana broke the deadlock shortly after the half-hour mark but Nketiah equalised on the brink of half-time, poking the ball into the net from close range following a Gabriel Martinelli corner. It was a proud evening for the Hale End academy graduate, with Mikel Arteta naming him as the club captain for the day.
When asked about Arteta’s decision to name him skipper for the day, Nketiah told the club’s official media team: “It was an amazing experience. Obviously it was my first time, so I’m grateful to the coach for trusting me, and my teammates.
“It was nice to test ourselves against a good opponent and for myself, it was really a special moment for me to lead the team out in front of my family, my friends and also our wonderful supporters. It was very intense, there were a lot of transitions in the game. We’ve been training hard during the week as well, so it was good.
“Personally, I feel good, I feel fit; so, it was nice to get 82 minutes into my legs. I’m sure it’ll put me in good stead.” Legendary former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was in attendance for the match yesterday, with the Frenchman handing Nketiah his first-team debut back in September 2017.
Wenger also watched on from the stands on Boxing Day of last year when the talented young forward netted during his side’s 3-1 victory over West Ham United, causing the 23-year-old to joke that his former boss is now his lucky talisman. “I’ll take him [here] next week as well if he can,” he added.
“I was speaking to him in the changing room after and he’s really proud of me. I’m really grateful for everything he did for me for my career, and it’s great to have such a legend here and see a new statue outside.
