Benjamin Pavard has already hinted that he might be open to leaving Bayern Munich – despite initially pledging his future to the Bundesliga champions last season.

Speculation over the 27-year-old has resurfaced during the summer transfer window as Arsenal and Manchester United continue to be linked with a swoop for his signature. Mikel Arteta could be forced back into the market after Jurrien Timber was ruled out for several months with a serious knee injury.

Timber has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament only two games into his Arsenal career. It means Arteta has two weeks to potentially find a replacement from elsewhere.

United – and manager Erik ten Hag in particular – are claimed to be long-term admirers of World Cup winner Pavard, who has 12 months left to run on his contract. However, developing reports this summer state Arsenal are now willing to ‘hijack’ a move for the versatile defender.

Pavard, who can operate at right-back and centre-back, played 45 minutes for Bayern during their 3-0 defeat to RB Leipzig in the DFL Super Cup on Saturday night. But will that prove to be one of his last outings for the club after he signed for them for €35million (£30million) from Stuttgart four years ago?

Speaking about reported interest this time last season, he said: “I questioned myself. I had calls from different clubs and my agent. Afterwards, I had the Bayern coach [at that stage Julian Nagelsmann] with whom we spoke and with whom we have a good relationship. He made me understand I was important for the team.

“Maybe one day I will go to one of these clubs, as you never know what the future holds. I’m still a year [in contract] at Bayern Munich. Afterwards, we have time to project ourselves.”

Pavard was asked about revived speculation in March. Distancing himself from a switch, at that stage, he added: “I never said that I wanted to go [during the summer]. I know very well that I’m at a very big club where everything is excellently positioned.

“I’m not one to disembark mid-voyage. My goal was, definitely, to stay at Bayern. I’m determined to give everything for the club – and I want to win as many titles as possible with Bayern.”
