Arsenal keeper Aaron Ramsdale was accused of feigning applause by Sky pundit Jamie Carragher after he clapped a save from David Raya in Sunday’s north London derby
Aaron Ramsdale has posted a telling riposte to Jamie Carragher after losing his place in the Arsenal side to David Raya.
The loan signing of the Spanish keeper raised eyebrows in the summer, especially given Ramsdale was perceived to have been a major factor in the Gunners challenging for the Premier League title last season. And after displacing the English international for the previous two games, Raya was given the nod for Sunday’s north London derby.
One eye-catching save in the first half had Ramsdale applauding from the bench, but Sky pundit Carragher was having none of it. Accusing the now No 2 of playing up to the cameras, he likened Ramsdale’s behaviour to that of a Hollywood actor.
“I thought it was like the Oscars, you know when someone loses the Oscar and they start clapping and smiling for the other person,” he said. “I was laughing when I saw that. He’s absolutely devastated with that really.”

Initially, the 25-year-old declined to respond to the comments, with his dad Nick instead taking aim at the former Liverpool man. He took to social media to write: “You are a Disgrace!! Show some class!! My lad has.”
And now Ramsdale himself has issued a riposte, albeit in a cryptic manner. He took to Instagram to re-post a picture from his time at Bournemouth in August 2019, when he was on the bench for a penalty shoot-out League Cup win over Forest Green.
The image shows Ramsdale clearly embracing the post-match celebrations despite not being involved in the XI, leaping towards Mark Travers, the Bournemouth stopper for the night. Alongside the snap, he wrote: “@marktravers1 through to the next round. Well in big man.”

He also reposted a second image to his story, of him surging towards Arsenal teammates to celebrate Reiss Nelson’s late strike against Bournemouth last season. The post seemingly reflected his ‘team player’ stance, regardless of whether he starts or not.
Wednesday however, could represent a significant point in Ramsdale’s Arsenal career. The Gunners go to Brentford in the Carabao Cup, which would seemingly give Arteta the chance to give his axed keeper a full 90 minutes.

However, Arsenal have reportedly struck a deal with the Bees, from who they signed Raya on loan in the summer, that would allow them to field the Spaniard against his parent club. Arteta has traditionally gone full strength in the cup competitions, with his only major silverware at the club coming from via the 2019/20 FA Cup.
