Arsenal eyeing Osimhen as potential striker signing in January
Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Napoli and Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen in the January transfer window, as they look to bolster their attacking options. The Gunners have been struggling to score goals this season, with only 12 goals in 10 Premier League games so far. Their main strikers, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette, have been out of form and have scored only three goals each in all competitions. ¹
Osimhen, on the other hand, has been in sensational form for Napoli and Nigeria this season. The 24-year-old has scored 18 goals in 17 games for his club, including six goals in six Champions League games. He has also scored six goals in six games for his country, helping them qualify for the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations. ²³
Osimhen is considered one of the best strikers in the world, as well as one of the best players in the world. He is known for his elite finishing, pace, strength and athleticism. ⁴ He won the Serie A Best Young Player award in the 2021–22 season and, in the following season, helped Napoli win their first Serie A title in 33 years. He is the highest goalscoring African in the Serie A and currently holds the record for the most goals scored by an African in a single season. ⁵⁶ He was ranked number 8 in the 2023 Ballon d’Or award which was held in Paris, France and became the first Nigerian to make the top ten of the Ballon d’Or.
According to FootballTransfers, Arsenal have held talks with Osimhen over a deal to bring him to the Emirates in January. The report claims that initial talks were held over signing the 24-year-old last week. However, Arsenal face stiff competition from other clubs, such as Liverpool and Chelsea, who are also keen on signing Osimhen.
Napoli are reluctant to sell their star striker, who is under contract until 2025. The Italian club value Osimhen at around £95 million, which would make him one of the most expensive players in history. Arsenal would have to break their transfer record to sign Osimhen, which currently stands at £72 million for Nicolas Pepe from Lille in 2019.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has admitted that he is looking for a striker in January, saying: “We need to score more goals and we need somebody who can help us with that.” Osimhen could be the perfect solution for Arsenal’s goal drought, as he has proven himself at the highest level of club and international football. However, Arsenal will have to act fast and pay a hefty fee to secure his services, as he is one of the hottest properties in world football right now.
