Paul Merson predicts what the score will be between Newcastle and Arsenal on Saturday
The big games for Newcastle United never end, as next up for Eddie Howe’s side is a visit from Arsenal.
Newcastle are back at St James’ Park following their Carabao Cup heroics, where the Magpies beat Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford to progress to the quarter finals.
Now Howe must switch his focus back to the Premier League, as he prepares to welcome a title challenger to St James’ Park.
Arsenal have enjoyed a strong start to the season, and are currently second in the table after 10 games. They look like title contenders once again, just like they were in the previous campaign.
On their last visit to St James’ Park, Arsenal showed why they pushed Manchester City so hard last season. They beat Howe’s side 2-0, which was very impressive given Newcastle’s home form.
They will need to produce a similar display if they want the same result, as the Magpies’ record at St James’ Park is spectacular once again. On top of that, Newcastle will be full of confidence after Wednesday night’s win.
It should be an absolutely brilliant game of football between Newcastle and Arsenal, and it is one that former Gunners forward Paul Merson believes will end in a draw.

As part of his latest column for Sportskeeda, Merson has predicted the scores for this weekend’s Premier League fixtures. He believes Newcastle vs Arsenal will be a 1-1 draw.

“It could turn out to be a blessing for Arsenal that they were eliminated from the Carabao Cup as it allows them to put more focus on their Premier League title challenge,” he said.
“I look at this game and think if Arsenal win, the race for the league title becomes a heads or tails clash between the Gunners and Manchester City, as an away victory at St James’ Park would be a huge statement.
“Newcastle have injuries but they are a good team at home and rarely lose games in front of their own fans. The West Ham result won’t hurt Arsenal in the long-term but could prove to be a bit of a knockout punch, so I’m going for a 1-1 draw here.”
Draw would be a good result for Newcastle
While Newcastle believe they can beat anyone at home, a draw against Arsenal would have to be considered a good result.
They played us off the park last season, and have only gotten stronger with the arrival of Declan Rice.
But it speaks volumes of Newcastle’s quality that Merson is not backing his former club to be victorious on the road. That is testament to what Howe has built at St James’ Park, with teams dreading a trip to the North East.
Arsenal coped with the occasion last season, but were unable to the year before. During Howe’s first home game against Arsenal as Newcastle manager, his side were dominant.
That was a special performance from the Magpies, and a repeat of that night in May 2022 would be a real treat for the Toon Army.
