MIKEL ARTETA LEFT ANGRY AFTER NUFC DEFEAT
Jamie Carragher has questioned what Arsenal and Mikel Arteta are ‘actually unhappy about’ with Newcastle United’s controversial winner. Anthony Gordon scored the only goal of the game at St James’ Park on Saturday evening to settle another feisty encounter between the sides.
Referee Stuart Atwell allowed what proved to be the winning goal to stand, before the strike was subject to a lengthy VAR review. The triple check concluded the goal should not be chalked off, a decision which Arteta described as ‘disgraceful’ in his passionate post-match interviews.
Arsenal released a statement on Sunday standing by Arteta’s comments, criticising ‘unacceptable’ referee and VAR calls. Carragher drew parallels to Liverpool’s protests last month after Luis Diaz’s strike was incorrectly disallowed, and the Sky Sports pundit is disappointed the Gunners have joined the ‘bandwagon’ of condemning VAR.

Carragher told Sky Sports: “I’ve just seen Arsenal have put a statement out and I don’t really agree with that. This happened a few weeks ago with Liverpool, it was a different set of circumstances in some ways but I didn’t really agree with what Liverpool put out at the time.
“I covered the game last night and on the back of Mikel Arteta’s interview, I said I loved it and the reason I said that was because I think far too often, managers before and after games just speak in cliches and don’t really tell us how they feel. I loved the fact Mikel Arteta was passionate, he was really honest, he was emotional and it was great TV which is why I did love it.
“I didn’t actually agree with what he said in terms of not being happy with the VAR. I could understand as there was three checks of it and the goal gets given, but I’m still scratching my head to think what is Mikel Arteta and Arsenal actually unhappy about with that goal. What part of it?
“Put yourself in Howard Webb’s position or VAR, they can’t conclusively know whether that ball was in or out and the on-field decision was the game carried on so they have to go with that. The ball comes in the box…is there a foul? It’s probably a 50/50, but it’s not a terrible decision.
“It can go either way, and me being a centre-back, I’d look at Gabriel and say you know what mate, you should have been stronger and head that away. The last bit about it is offside, it wasn’t given on the field, very difficult to give it of course it was.
“But VAR didn’t have a camera or an angle that could see that because of the ball being so close to Joelinton, everyone being in close proximity, so what do you want VAR to do? What do you want the officials to do?”
He added: “This is not another to jump on the bandwagon with VAR and just batter people at Stockley Park because that’s not right. Nothing was conclusive after the goal was given on the field, so it had to be a goal. End of story.”
