The Premier League’s Independent Key Match Incidents Panel has outlined why Stuart Attwell’s decision to award Anthony Gordon’s goal for Newcastle against Arsenal was the right decision – but found two other blunders.
The winning goal was given by referee Attwell in the second-half at the weekend after it was deemed to have stayed in play, with Joelinton cleared of a possible foul on Gabriel and finally Gordon deemed not to have been offside.
The panel has voted on the incident and agreed that the correct decision was made while picking out how two players should’ve been dismissed in the same fixture.

The panel agreed that Kai Havertz should’ve been sent off for Mikel Arteta’s men for a ‘very dangerous challenge’ on Sean Longstaff which they say needs to be eradicated from the game.
Bruno Guimaraes can also consider himself lucky according to the panel who voted 3-2 that he should’ve been dismissed for catching Jorginho in the head in the 45th minute.
The panel is made up of five members who are either former players or coaches as well as representatives from the Premier League and PGMOL.

The panel was set up at the start of the 2022/23 season to give an independent assessment of decisions made in matches.
Arteta is not set to be pleased by the opinions after a rant that began during post-match interviews and continued into his press conference with the club even releasing a statement backing him up.
Arsenal’s official statement began: “Arsenal Football Club wholeheartedly supports Mikel Arteta’s post-match comments after yet more unacceptable refereeing and VAR errors on Saturday evening.”

However, former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher also didn’t agree with the Spaniard, saying it couldn’t be confirmed if the ball went out of play and the foul was subjective.
Gallagher said on Sky Sports: “The crux of the matter is that it was a subjective decision.
“For me, it’s a push but I’ve spoken to a lot of people and while a lot agreed with me there were as many who didn’t. That’s the dilemma. The referee said it wasn’t a foul and the VAR didn’t see enough to over-rule him.”
