Arsenal have written to the FA in the wake of the club statement released backing Mikel Arteta’s comments on VAR following defeat to Newcastle. The Gunners saw their unbeaten run in the Premier League end courtesy of a highly controversial Anthony Gordon goal which went through three VAR checks before being given.

In his post-match press conference, Arteta unleashed a brutal rant on the topic with his words later backed up by a club statement. “We have to talk about the result because you have to talk about how the hell this goal stand ups and it’s incredible,” he told reporters.

“I feel embarrassed but I have to be the one now coming here to try to defend the club and please ask for help, because it’s an absolute disgrace that this goal is allowed. Because it’s not a goal for many reasons; it’s not a goal, for more than one reason at least.

“It’s not a goal and it’s too much at stake here. Again, I feel embarrassed having more than 20 years in this country, and this is nowhere near the level to describe this as the best league in the world. I am sorry.” In an attempt to be transparent with the decisions, PGMOL chief Howard Webb has appeared live on TV to discuss controversial decisions with the audio from Stockley Park also revealed.

With significant chatter surrounding Gordon’s goal, the checks done by the VAR team for the clash at St James’ Park are set to be heard for the first time publicly since the incident over ten days ago.

According to the Mail, Arsenal were warned ahead of time that the VAR audio from Gordon’s goal was set to be aired on Tuesday, November 14. In that report it was also revealed that Arsenal had wrote back to the FA after both the club and Arteta himself were contacted to explain their post-match comments.

The exact contents of the reply is unknown but it is certainly possible they will have doubled down on their claims following support from other Premier League managers. Alternatively, it could easily go the opposite way with Arsenal and Arteta apologising for their actions.
