Manchester City will look to continue their winning run at the Etihad when they host Liverpool on Saturday with history in their sights as a result of their home form
Manchester City have been likened to Arsenal’s Invincibles as they look to continue their blistering home form.
Pep Guardiola’s side last failed to win at the Etihad before the World Cup in Qatar. Brentford secured a shock victory in November but since then the champions have won every game they’ve played on home soil. One of those wins was a commanding 4-1 success over Liverpool, who they play on Saturday.
Another three points against the Reds will be their 24th successive home win, which would equal Sunderland’s 131-year-old record. Martin Keown has compared City to Arsenal’s famous 2003/04 side, whose win ratio at their north London base was through the roof.

He wrote in the Daily Mail: “While Pep Guardiola’s men have looked more human away from home — losing to Wolves and Arsenal and conceding four at Chelsea — the Etihad is where they have turned into the Premier League’s greatest modern-day test. Just as Highbury brought the best out of us at Arsenal in our Invincibles season of 2003-04, City can totally express themselves at home.”
During City’s incredible winning run they’ve seen off the majority of their main rivals. Liverpool have been dispatched, Arsenal were beaten in a crucial game last term, Newcastle, Chelsea and Tottenham have also left with nothing.
Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp have endured some fantastic battles on English soil, but the City boss has never lost to his German rival at the Etihad in the league. He’s won four and drawn three of their seven encounters – with three of those wins by heavy margins.

Bernardo Silva has called on the Etihad crowd to bring the energy, which has inspired the team to famous wins domestically and in Europe. “It is always better to play at home with your fans. We have that feeling at home at the Etihad and we felt it last season in the Premier League and the Champions League,” he said.
“The energy that the crowd creates at the Etihad is unbelievable and again against Liverpool we are going to try and create that special atmosphere to push us again, knowing we are playing against a very tough opponent.”
Guardiola added on the challenge facing his team: “Liverpool last season had a lot of problems in terms of injury. They have no Champions League this season. Liverpool have always been there. Maybe they have the ability to do it. Liverpool will be contenders 100%. Both teams in last seven, eight years have been there. We have to win it on the field and with our people who will perform.”
