James Maddison has admitted that he is a big fan of Declan Rice, joking that he hates that the midfielder plays for Arsenal.

Maddison was speaking to Ben Foster on Amazon Prime Sport as he was discussing some of his England teammates after helping the Three Lions qualify for Euro 2024.

One of the first names on Gareth Southgate’s teamsheet next summer will surely be Declan Rice. The 24-year-old has kicked on since making the club-record move to Arsenal in the previous transfer window.

Rice has potentially been the best player in the Premier League so far this season. Certainly, Rice has done brilliantly to silence anyone who wants to discuss whether Arsenal spent too much on him.

Of course, his form may not be too easy for James Maddison to watch. The 27-year-old has himself, been a superb signing for North London rivals Tottenham.

But clearly, the attacking midfielder has been so impressed by the Arsenal man.

“He’s technically really, really good,” he told Amazon Prime Sport. “Me and Dec, when we do passing at England, in one of the warm-ups we have to do passing over a long distance, pretty basic, but I love going with Dec, because we love doing the daisy-cutter, the little zingers where it doesn’t matter if it goes wrong because we’re practising. And he is a joke at it. He’s the best I’ve seen at it. That low zing cut, it’s almost like a golf shot to him.

“I think Dec’s just a top, top player, I do. I hate that he plays for Arsenal. He is a top, top player.”

Game-changing signing for the Gunners
Obviously, Tottenham fans may not be best pleased should they read Maddison’s comments on Rice. But you cannot deny that he has been a really good signing for Arsenal.

He has moved seamlessly into Mikel Arteta’s side. He brings a lot of the same quality as Thomas Partey. But he is proving to be so much more reliable when it comes to remaining fit and available.

It is remarkable that he has taken so little time to settle in – much like Maddison over at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Rice could potentially be a stalwart of the Arsenal side for years to come. He certainly looks to have the potential to be a future captain of the Gunners.

And it says a lot that he has impressed Maddison with his technical ability.
