Arsenal have been handed a timely midfield boost with Thomas Partey likely to return in the new year.
The 30-year-old has been out of action since August after suffering a thigh injury in Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Manchester City. Partey has now suffered nine separate setbacks since arriving from Atletico Madrid back in 2020 and the Gunners are said to be in the market for a new midfielder heading into the January window.
However, with the African Cup of Nations now right around the corner, many had questioned whether the midfielder would be fit enough to return and help his country at next month’s tournament in the Ivory Coast.
As it transpires, Partey has now been named in Ghana’s 55-man provisional squad, as the deadline for the final submission edges closer and closer. Questions had arisen over the possibility of Eddie Nketiah representing the Black Stars too, but the 22-year-old has not made the list issued by Chris Hughton.
Mikel Arteta will likely be without Partey and fellow midfielder Mohamed Elneny too, with the latter set to help Egypt at the competition in the new-year period. It does look like Edu may be forced to find a solution to their ongoing problems in the middle of the park, with Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz touted with a potential switch to the Emirates Stadium.
