‘Really poor’… Alan Shearer blames two Arsenal players after what happened vs West Ham

Alan Shearer has pointed the finger at Arsenal duo Declan Rice and Gabriel Magalhaes for their part in West Ham United’s opening goal last night.

The Gunners suffered the first defeat of the season at home yesterday. It was a difficult one to take as they dominated most of the game, but Shearer believes Arsenal‘s Rice and Gabriel should’ve done much better to avoid Tomas Soucek’s goal.

Alan Shearer criticises Arsenal’s Declan Rice and Gabriel Jesus
Arsenal missed a huge opportunity to return to the top of the Premier League table last night.

The Gunners looked sharp from the very first minute and were all over West Ham. Mikel Arteta‘s side taking the lead looked inevitable at that point, but it was the visitors who scored against the run of play.

Jarrod Bowen found himself on the by-line and was given the time he needed to find Tomas Soucek inside the box, who tapped the ball in to put the Hammers in front.

It was a controversial goal as the ball did seem like it had gone out of play before Bowen crossed it, but Arsenal should’ve done better to defend it, and Shearer believes two Gunners stars are to blame – Declan Rice and Gabriel Magalhaes.

He said on Amazon Prime Video Sport at half-time: “When they look at it, [Arsenal will] be really disappointed, Bowen is able to get in behind Rice and in front of Gabriel.

“He decided to mark the space instead of mark the man. There’s plenty to get stuck into despite whether the ball went out or not. If you look at Rice, he doesn’t know where Bowen is. Gabriel does know where Bowen is, and he can mark him, he should mark him in reality.

“He goes to defend the space instead of the man. Bowen is the one who causes the damage and keeps the ball alive and Soucek sticks it away. From Arsenal’s point of view, it is really poor defending.”

Declan Rice had a poor game last night
All eyes were on Declan Rice when Arsenal took on West Ham United last night.

It was the Englishman’s first game against his old club in the Premier League, and he would’ve wanted to do well against David Moyes‘ side.

However, for the first time this season, Rice had a poor game. He was partly at fault for West Ham’s opener, couldn’t do much to penetrate the Hammers’ low block and conceded a penalty in the end as well.

Arsenal fans, however, cannot be too hard on Rice. He has been magnificent all season and last night’s performance was arguably the first time he has underperformed in a Gunners shirt.

That is normal for any footballer, and we’re sure he’ll bounce back strongly in the next game.
