Arsenal have been linked with a host of strikers ahead of the January transfer window. Victor Osimhen of Napoli and Brentford frontman Ivan Toney have both been mooted as possible options for the north London outfit, who are missing a clinical centre-forward at this moment in time.

Another name that has also been mentioned is Bournemouth star Dominic Solanke. Former Chelsea hero Chris Sutton even suggested that Solanke made a lot of sense for Mikel Arteta’s side, who currently sit second in the Premier League table, two points off league-leaders Liverpool.

Speaking to the BBC, Sutton said: “There’s been plenty of talk already about how manager Mikel Arteta needs to sign another striker in January. Brentford’s Ivan Toney has been linked for a while, but he has not played for months because of his suspension. He will have been training, but how much match sharpness does he have?

“Arsenal are trying to win the title, so they haven’t got time to wait for anyone to get up to speed. If we are looking at the names that are supposedly within their grasp, Bournemouth’s Dominic Solanke stands out as the best candidate.”

So with all of that being said, football.london has taken a look at the possibilities of a potential deal for the Cherries hitman.

What has manager said about transfers and targets?

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has always remained coy when asked about his side’s need for a new centre-forward, something that he has consistently done during his time at the club. Back in September, when asked if he was planning on recruiting a striker in January, Arteta replied: “We’re not thinking at all about that.

“We have really good players up front. It’s true that right now we have some injuries. We will continue with the players we have.”

What does football.london know about a potential move?

football.london reported earlier this week that given their heavy spending in the summer, Arsenal are unlikely to have too much to spend in January, so loan deals with an option to buy could be preferable. As things stand though, unless such a deal presents itself, it would seem internal solutions are the more likely course of action for Arsenal.

How long does he have left on his contract?

According to Transfermarkt, Solanke’s contract at the Vitality Stadium expires in the summer of 2027.

How much will he cost?

Considering the length of his contract, Solanke would surely cost a huge fee, especially in January. Speaking to BBC Radio Solent Sport, Bournemouth owner Foley has dismissed any possibility of the forward leaving, claiming the opportunity is more than unlikely to happen.

“The door’s closed and bolted shut,” the 78-year-old recently told Kris Temple.

Our verdict

Solanke is no doubt a top striker. After a few years of struggling in front of goal, the 26-year-old has developed his game, already netting 12 Premier League goals this term, a hugely impressive feat that is more than double the tally of any Arsenal player.

However, I’m not sure if he is good enough to take Arsenal to the title. If the Gunners are going to splash out a huge sum on a centre-forward it makes more sense to wait for the summer, when prices will be lower and when Osimhen could potentially be available.
