Mohamed Elneny is set to become the first player to depart Arsenal in the January transfer window.
The midfielder has made just one appearance in the Premier League this season, with the 31-year-old way down Mikel Arteta’s pecking order. Instead, the likes of Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, Jorginho and Kai Havertz have been preferred to run the engine room.
Despite Arteta’s side winning just one of their last five league games, Elneny has been unable earn a place in the team. That could now lead to him departing this month, as Arteta looks to set his squad up for a renewed push for the title.

According to the Daily Mail, Turkish sides Trabzonspor and Besiktas have both made offers to take the Egyptian off the Gunners’ hands. The title challengers are willing to accept a deal that would see the 31-year-old leave the Emirates Stadium.
Elneny’s contract expires at the end of this season, with the midfielder having also spent the 2019/2020 campaign at Besiktas. He signed a one-year deal back in February and has been called up to the Egypt squad for the Africa Cup of Nations.
The midfielder has flown out to the Ivory Coast for the tournament, which gets underway next Thursday. He was part of the team which reached the AFCON final in 2021 and is looking to go one better this time around.

Egypt wrap up their group stage games on 22 January, but Elneny will likely be away after that point with The Pharaohs expected to reach the knockout stages. Elneny’s impending exit comes after the Gunners dropped to fourth in the table after a defeat to Fulham.
After their 2-1 loss at Craven Cottage, boss Arteta admitted his side needed to reset. Their next league outing is three weeks away as they take their winter break from top-flight action.
“We certainly need a reset after today because that’s going to be in our tummy for a few days. The game against West Ham felt very different because you can move on, it can happen. What happened today cannot happen again,” Arteta said.
“If you do that, you’re never going to have the chance to be where we want to be. Today it could have been a beautiful way to finish the year top of the league. These are the margins and you have to find the balance.
