Godfrey’s Premier League appearances for Everton have seen a steady decline from 31 in the 2020/21 season to just 9 in the current 2023/24 season. This reduction in playing time, coupled with his substantial weekly wage of £76,000, which is significantly higher than key midfielder James Garner’s £30,000, has led to discussions about his future at Goodison Park.
Given the financial pressures facing Everton and Godfrey’s diminishing role in the squad, it may be time for the club to consider selling him. This move could help Everton recoup some of their initial investment and alleviate their wage bill, potentially saving the club around £4 million annually.
Godfrey, now 26, finds himself as the third-choice centre-back under Dyche, behind preferred options like Branthwaite and Tarkowski. With just one year left on his contract and his form not matching his earlier promise, a departure could benefit both parties. For Everton, it’s an opportunity to address their financial Fair Play concerns, and for Godfrey, a chance to rejuvenate his career elsewhere.
Everton’s situation requires tough decisions, and moving on from players like Godfrey, who command high wages but offer limited on-field contributions, might be a necessary step. As the club navigates its financial challenges, such decisions could prove crucial in ensuring Everton’s sustainability and competitiveness in the Premier League.
