‘How is that not given?’ – Dyche baffled by decision not to award Everton a penalty

Everton’s performance against AFC Bournemouth was severely lacking in inspiration and effort, resulting in a disappointing defeat. Despite a late goal from Beto that almost salvaged a point for Everton, the team’s efforts were undone by a last-minute own goal from Seamus Coleman. This incident was emblematic of Everton’s overall poor showing after a considerable break from league action.

Martin Keown, speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day, expressed his frustration with the team’s handling of the situation leading to the own goal. He pointed out that the ease with which the throw-in was taken and the subsequent delivery into the box were not adequately dealt with by the Everton players. Keown specifically called out goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who appeared unprepared for the throw-in, and Jarrad Branthwaite, who, along with Coleman, failed to take responsibility, resulting in the own goal. Keown described the moment as a “disaster.”

Despite Everton’s recent string of poor results, there have been some positive moments, such as their near victory against Brighton and Hove Albion and the chances they created against West Ham United. However, the match against Bournemouth offered no such consolations, with Everton posing little threat to the opposition’s goal and only scoring due to a mistake by Bournemouth’s goalkeeper.

The defeat extends Everton’s winless streak and leaves the club in a precarious position. The upcoming match against Burnley is now seen as a critical opportunity for Everton to turn their fortunes around and secure a much-needed victory.
