Everton: Points deduction could increase after latest appeal news on Sky Sports

Kaveh Solhekol claims that there is a small chance that the appeal panel will end up increasing the Everton points deduction, which is currently two points.

Speaking on Sky Sports on 15 April, the journalist showcases the merits of appealing what is their second deduction of the season.

However, that runs the risk of the three-person panel taking a dim view of this and choosing to punish the Toffees further.

Solhekol said: “If you look at the table at the moment I think they’re two points above the relegation zone and being in the Premier League is so important.

“Dropping out of the Premier League, relegation, costs you hundreds of millions of pounds. So why not appeal? Because the first time around they were deducted 10 points, they appealed, they got that reduced to six points, so this time around let’s appeal again and see what happens.

“I think there is a small chance in these appeals that the new three-person panel could decide to increase the penalty so that is a risk I think that has been discussed in the past but we haven’t seen that so far in the appeal processes and I think the vast majority of people in football would say Everton are doing the right thing.”

The suggestion that the club could face an increased points deduction for their second appeal seems far-fetched and draconian.

Solhekol’s comments highlight the importance of remaining in the Premier League and the financial implications of relegation, which could cost the club hundreds of millions of pounds.

Given that the Toffees successfully appealed their initial 10-point deduction, reducing it to six points, it seems unlikely that the appeal panel would choose to increase their current two-point deduction.

The Premier League’s financial regulations are designed to maintain a level playing field and ensure the financial sustainability of clubs.

However, imposing a harsher penalty on Everton for appealing would potentially discourage other clubs from challenging sanctions and undermine the integrity of the appeal process.

The panel should consider the merits of the appeal and make a fair decision based on the evidence presented, rather than punishing the club for exercising their right to appeal.

It is worth noting that the Merseyside outfit’s financial struggles have been well documented, and the club has already faced significant penalties this season so further increasing their points deduction would not only be unfair but could also have severe consequences for the club’s future in the Premier League.
