Everton points deduction appeal: Wyness reveals ‘likely outcome’ – ‘I never thought I’d say this…’

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed the club could see their two-point deduction reduced by “half a point” after their appeal.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed getting half a point back could be “crucial” to survival with a tough run-in to come for Sean Dyche’s side.

Everton were handed a two-point deduction this week for breaching the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) for the second time.

The Toffees have already been handed a six-point penalty for their first offence, which was reduced from 10 after appeal.

Goodison Park chiefs have already confirmed their intention to appeal the latest verdict – with an outcome due before 24 May, one week after the end of this season.

Wyness reveals ‘likely’ Everton appeal outcome – ‘this could be crucial’
Wyness has suggested the appeal will centre around Everton’s cooperation with the Premier League’s investigation.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Getting half a point back after an appeal is a fairly likely outcome.

“I think the appeal will centre on Everton’s cooperation with the Premier League.

“In the first case, the Premier League stated that working with them should be the minimum requirement for all clubs.

“Nottingham Forest were given two points back for co-operation, but Everton were only given half a point back.

“Everton say they co-operated fully. There are nine boxes which must be ticked to show that, apparently they only ticked seven or eight.

“Working backwards, the last game of the season is away at Arsenal.

“That could be a title-deciding game. Everton, in theory, could be playing that game to stay up.

“We’ve still got Liverpool coming to Goodison. We’re away at Chelsea next week.

“It’s a very tough run in – and two points could be crucial. Even potentially getting half a point back after appeal could be crucial – and I never thought I’d say that.”
