Gary Lineker thinks he knows the three teams the Premier League want to go down after Everton’s point loss

Everton are back in action again later tonight, as they seek to claim the vital points needed to avoid the drop.

This has been an arduous, unending season for fans and players alike at Goodison Park, with matters outside of their control continuing to hamper their progress.

And yet, despite all the Premier League’s efforts to hold them back, they still remain in a relatively strong position as they enter the run-in.

A win over Chelsea tonight would only further solidify that stance, and likely prove Alan Shearer’s prediction correct.

Speaking on this week’s iteration of the The Rest is Football podcast, once again the three pundits combed over the Premier League’s unrelenting deduction scandal.

After all, it is impossible to ignore, and completely encompasses the entire relegation battle.

Both Everton and Nottingham Forest have been pegged back due to this PSR nonsense, and the uncertainty it has provided has in turn hamstrung Luton Town too.

However, regardless of these setbacks, Shearer still feels confident in what will be the bottom three at the end of the season: ‘I think the bottom three in terms of Sheffield United, Burnley and Luton.’

Interestingly enough, Gary Lineker actually suggested that the Premier League might actually prefer that to be the case, replying: ‘I suspect, and I know this is a bit unfair, but I suspect the Premier League will be sort of hoping that’s the case. Because that way the points deductions won’t affect it.’

Everton can start their survival push with a result tonight
Well, Sean Dyche would certainly take that being the bottom three come the end of this season.

And, with a trip to Chelsea tonight, he will feel quietly confident of claiming a scalp at Stamford Bridge against a side that have looked somewhat shaky this season.

After all, not only did they brush aside the West London outfit at Goodison Park earlier in the season, but having claimed a victory over Burnley last weekend, they are a team finally free of this Premier League winless burden which had stuck with them throughout 2024.

Whilst the hosts of boast a plethora of talent, a lack of cohesion has often left them relying on individual moments of brilliance, often performed by Cole Palmer.

If Dyche can silence him, then he will be in a great position to taste victory once again in back-to-back

Given Forest and Luton Town both dropped points this weekend too, it could mark a monumental three points, should they claim them.
