Everton: Abdoulaye Doucoure makes ‘serious’ transfer admission after Goodison exit speculation

Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure has admitted he was the subject of “serious” transfer interest in January but never wanted to leave Goodison Park.

The Mali international has been key when fit for Sean Dyche this season, but his good form on Merseyside didn’t go unnoticed with Fabrizio Romano (20 January) reporting Al Ettifaq approached the Toffees to sign the 31-year-old.

Doucoure had only recently signed a new contract at Goodison Park and while he has revealed the transfer interest was genuine, he insists that he “was very happy” to remain an Everton player.

As quoted by the Liverpool Echo on Thursday (18 April) he said: “The interest was serious but to be honest it was never my concern because I had just signed a new deal. The club wanted me to stay and I wanted to stay here.

“To leave in the middle of the season, I wouldn’t do that. I was very happy to stay.”

Will Abdoulaye Doucoure leave Everton in the summer transfer window?
Everton’s current financial position has made it very hard for the Toffees to guarantee that their biggest starts will be able to be kept at Goodison, but Doucoure’s decision has shown that players enjoy playing under Dyche.

The 31-year-old could have dodged the remainder of the relegation battle and jumped ship to the Saudi Pro League where he would have likely earned loads of money in a much lower-pressure environment than the Premier League.

But the Mali international decided to stay and battle at Goodison. That sort of character is exactly what Dyche needs in the fight against relegation and if the Toffees stay up, Doucoure will likely play a massive role.

Hopefully, Doucoure’s commitment is rewarded this season and Everton will still be in the Premier League come to the start of next season as it feels unlikely that the 31-year-old, or other stars, will be willing to stay on in the Championship.
