Everton third points deduction: Wyness can’t believe ‘truly surprising’ new details
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has hit out at the Premier League for pursuing a third points deduction over stadium costs.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the Toffees’ new ground will help the Premier League and will mean the Merseysiders are a more sustainable club.
Everton were handed a two-point deduction by an independent commission for breaching the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) in the 2022-23 season by £16.6million – with clubs only allowed to lose £105million over three years.
The club have argued that £6.5million of this overspend should not be attributable to PSR – claiming those funds have been put towards the construction of their new stadium.
Premier League chiefs have rejected those claims and a subsequent hearing is due over the summer – with another potential points deduction coming Everton’s way.
Wyness ‘truly surprised’ as Premier League pursue third Everton deduction
Wyness has hit out at the dispute, claiming financial regulation is “going completely in the wrong direction”.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “This one is truly surprising to me.
“The Everton auditors, who are obviously accounting experts, have signed off that the costs have been capitalised on the stadium.

“Therefore, they should be allowable under PSR. The Premier League disagree, they have a different view on how it should have been accounted.

“This is not about buying players and gaining a sporting advantage. This is about the cost for a brand new stadium which will help the Premier League, help the club with sustainability and be part of the Euros.
“Here they are arguing over a minor amount. We’re getting lost and going completely in the wrong direction.”
