Keenan Carole, a talented young winger for Leeds United’s U21 team, has confirmed his departure from Elland Road via his father, Seb Carole. The 20-year-old’s contract expires on June 30, and he will leave the club after failing to break into the senior squad.
Seb Carole, a former Leeds winger himself, shared a message on social media from his son, thanking the club for the opportunities he had. “On behalf of Keenan, I’d like to thank Leeds United for the experience and opportunities he’s had at the club,” Seb wrote. “He’s grateful for the time he’s spent here and wishes the club all the best for the future.”
Keenan Carole has already begun exploring his options, spending time on trial with Sheffield Wednesday in South Yorkshire. While his next move is yet to be confirmed, it’s clear that he’s eager to find a club where he can break into the senior squad.
Leeds United’s decision to release Carole is part of their efforts to streamline their squad and focus on youth development. The club has improved its academy quality in recent years, achieving category one status, but this means that some players have unfortunately not made the grade.
As one fan, Barry Butteree, pointed out in the comments, the decision to release Carole and other young players has been controversial. “I am really angry right now,” Butteree wrote. “I cannot believe that the shortsighted decision-makers at Elland Road think that selling our future is a better alternative to a five-point deduction that we would receive when or if we get back into the Premiership.”
However, others have defended the club’s decision, pointing out that it’s necessary for the long-term success of the team. As one fan wrote, “Leeds United’s academy quality has been improved quite significantly in the past five or so years…some players have unfortunately not managed to make the grade.”
