Leeds United’s Former Under-21s Midfielder Morten Spencer Joins Derby County

Morten Spencer, a former Leeds United Under-21s midfielder, has signed with Derby County, a newly-promoted Championship club. Spencer spent five years at Thorp Arch, Leeds United’s training facility, before being released at the end of the 2023/24 season.

The 20-year-old Norwegian-English dual national joined Leeds United as a schoolboy from Sunderland’s academy system in 2019. During his time at Leeds, Spencer featured prominently for the Whites’ Under-21 setup, playing as a defensive midfielder, central defender, and full-back on occasion.

Spencer signed an extension with Leeds in February 2023 but was ultimately released after the 2023/24 campaign. Despite this, he leaves Leeds with an impressive record, having scored six goals and registered seven assists for the U18s, as well as one goal and assist apiece for the U21s.

Derby County, managed by Paul Warne, has signed Spencer with the intention of him joining their U21 group initially. However, the young midfielder has his sights set on breaking into the first-team at the iPro Stadium.

Spencer expressed his excitement about joining Derby County on social media, saying, “Delighted to have signed for this massive club.” His enthusiasm is understandable, given Derby’s recent promotion to the Championship and their ambitions for the upcoming season.

Derby finished second in League One last season, behind title winners Portsmouth, who Leeds United will face on the opening day of the 2024/25 campaign. The Rams will visit Elland Road on December 7, 2024, with the return fixture scheduled for December 29.
