According to a recent report from SunSport, Celtic are considering a summer move for Southampton youngster Shea Charles. The Scottish giants are keen on striking a deal, potentially offering an initial season-long loan with an option to buy.
Charles, 20, has already made a name for himself in the football world, progressing through Manchester City’s esteemed academy ranks since joining at the age of 7. He played a crucial role in City’s U23s’ Premier League 2 triumph and even trained with the first-team squad under Pep Guardiola.
Despite his talent, Charles found himself down the pecking order at City, leading to a transfer to Southampton for £10.5 million (potentially rising to £15 million). He made 38 appearances last season, contributing to the Saints’ promotion to the Premier League via a playoff win over Leeds United.
Celtic’s interest in Charles lies in his versatility, having played various positions, including deep-lying playmaker, centre-back, wide midfielder, ‘number 8’, and fullback. This adaptability makes him an attractive asset, despite limited minutes.
With Matt O’Riley’s future uncertain, Celtic are exploring options to bolster their midfield. Charles could be an exciting addition, emulating O’Riley’s success in the centre of the pitch. However, a straight swap or player-plus-cash deal seems unlikely at this stage.
The Hoops are also closing in on Paulo Bernardo from Benfica after a successful loan spell. Charles’s arrival would allow skipper Callum McGregor to operate as a box-to-box midfielder, adding depth to Celtic’s midfield.
