Sport Nation 2West Ham United has offered a two-year contract to free agent Joel Matip, according to Caught Offside. The 33-year-old central defender, who won the Premier League and Champions League with Liverpool, is currently without a club after his contract expired in the summer.
Matip suffered a serious knee injury last season and hasn’t played since, but is believed to be close to returning to action. His experience has piqued the interest of West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui, who is looking to bolster his defense.
However, Matip is not convinced by the offer and is considering other options. Fulham, Bournemouth, and Leicester City are also interested in signing him on a free transfer. With Max Kilman, Jean-Clair Todibo, and Dinos Mavropanos already at West Ham, Matip may not want to be a fourth-choice option in the final years of his career.
Additionally, West Ham is also interested in signing John Egan, who played in a behind-closed-doors friendly for the club against Doncaster Rovers. Egan is a free agent after leaving Sheffield United and has been linked with a move to West Ham.
The club had a busy summer transfer window, signing nine new players, including Kilman, Todibo, and Luis Guilherme. However, the late departures of Kurt Zouma and Nayef Aguerd have left Lopetegui with just three senior central defenders, prompting the move for Matip or Egan.
