Austute ManAnge Postecoglou Defends Celtic Success Comments Amid Spurs Pressure
Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has stood by his claim that he “always wins things” in his second year at a club, despite criticism following the 1-0 defeat to Arsenal.
Postecoglou, who guided Spurs to fifth place in his first season, was questioned about his pre-season comments regarding delivering success in his second campaign.
“I just stated a fact, and it seems like am I supposed to just lie?” Postecoglou said. “It is confusing to me that people are making a big deal out of something – surely I am supposed to answer something that is true?”
The 59-year-old pointed to his impressive track record:
“I’ve won trophies at every club I’ve been at in my second year – Celtic, South Melbourne, Brisbane Roar, Yokohama F Marinos. Why should I downplay that?”
Postecoglou lifted five trophies at Celtic, including a treble in his second season.
Spurs’ last trophy came in 2008, and Postecoglou is determined to end that drought.
“Do you really think it’s me boasting? I’ve answered a question truthfully,” he said. “If I don’t win in the second year, I’ll adjust my answer next year.”
