Rangers’ Europa League Victory Overshadowed by Celtic Reminders
Rangers’ 2-0 win over Malmo in the Europa League on Thursday night was a welcome result for the Ibrox club, but it couldn’t escape the lingering presence of Celtic. The Scottish champions have been a constant thorn in Rangers’ side, and even in victory, the reminders of their dominance were evident.
Former Premier League defender Gary Breen noticed that post-game questions to Rangers players and staff inevitably referenced Celtic. This, he believes, highlights the gap between the two teams. Having lost 3-0 to Celtic earlier this season and trailing them by five points in the Premiership, Rangers are acutely aware of the challenge ahead.
Breen commented, “Even the questions from the reporter after the game were about Celtic. It’s a constant reminder of how far behind Rangers are. But they can only deal with what’s in front of them, and I thought they acquitted themselves well tonight.”
In contrast, Rangers legend Kris Boyd was more optimistic, hailing the win as a significant milestone. “It’s the first time Rangers have beaten a Swedish side, and it was comfortable enough,” Boyd said. “The only worry for Philippe Clement would be that he wants ruthlessness in front of goal.”
Boyd’s enthusiasm was palpable, and he even went so far as to predict Rangers’ progression to the Europa League final in Bilbao. “I’m going to say something – it’s cheaper to book up for Bilbao now rather than wait until closer to May. That’s where the final is, and Rangers are on their way.”
While Boyd’s confidence is admirable, Breen’s assessment serves as a reality check. Rangers’ victory over Malmo was undoubtedly impressive, but the Celtic-shaped elephant in the room cannot be ignored.
Rangers manager Philippe Clement will be aware of the challenges ahead, and the constant reminders of Celtic’s dominance will only fuel his determination to close the gap. As the season unfolds, Rangers will need to demonstrate their ability to compete with their Glasgow rivals.
The Europa League provides a welcome distraction from domestic concerns, but ultimately, Rangers’ success will be measured by their performance in the Premiership. Can they bridge the gap with Celtic? Only time will tell.
