Former Leeds United manager Garry Monk has been handed a one-match touchline ban and fined £1,000 by the Football Association (FA) following his sending-off during Cambridge United’s 1-0 defeat to Rotherham earlier this month.
Monk, 45, was dismissed by the referee after full-time for allegedly acting in an improper and confrontational manner towards a match official. The incident occurred in the 93rd minute, after Cambridge conceded a late winner.
Monk admitted to the charge and accepted the standard penalty, which includes a one-match touchline ban and a £1,000 fine. He will miss Cambridge’s home game against Wigan Athletic next weekend.
The ban comes at a challenging time for Monk, whose Cambridge side is struggling in League One. The team has failed to win any of its opening nine games and sits at the bottom of the table, marking the club’s worst-ever start to an EFL season.
Cambridge’s poor form has increased pressure on Monk to turn results around. The club’s board recently released a statement acknowledging the disappointing start and emphasizing the need for improvement.
The statement read: “There is no sugar coating how poor our results have been… Unfortunately, multiple long-term injuries have really tested this approach and our squad depth – and there will be lessons for all of us to learn for the future.”
Despite the struggles, the board expressed support for Monk, stating: “We know how hard Garry, the staff and players are working. There is no shortage of endeavour, focus and togetherness within the group.”
Monk’s absence from the touchline next weekend may add to the challenges facing Cambridge. The team’s upcoming fixtures, including the postponed trip to Birmingham City, will be crucial in determining their chances of preserving their League One status.
As Monk serves his ban, attention will focus on his ability to revitalize Cambridge’s season and avoid relegation. The former Leeds United boss faces a tough task, but the international break provides an opportunity for the team to regroup and refocus.
