Gian Piero Gasperini Praises Atalanta’s Performance Despite Draw Against Celtic
Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini expressed pride in his team’s performance despite their 0-0 draw against Celtic in the Champions League.
“We had a good game in terms of consistency, but lacked quality,” Gasperini said in a post-match interview with Sky Italia.
Atalanta dominated possession and pushed Celtic deep into their own half, a rare feat according to Gasperini. However, they struggled to create clear-cut opportunities, with Mario Pasalic’s first-half shot hitting the post being the closest they came to scoring.
“I had never seen Celtic so perched and closed,” Gasperini noted, praising his team’s ability to pressure Celtic. “We facilitated unlocking the game immediately in Venice, but it didn’t happen tonight.”
This draw follows Atalanta’s missed opportunity against Arsenal, where Matteo Retegui’s penalty miss proved costly.
Gasperini’s comments highlight Atalanta’s impressive defensive display, but also acknowledge the need for improvement in attack.
As the Champions League progresses, Atalanta will look to capitalize on their dominant performances and address their attacking shortcomings to secure crucial points.
