Speaking to Swiss publication Blick, Mvogo shared insights into his transfer saga after Lorient’s relegation from Ligue 1 last season. Determined to continue playing at the highest level, he was eager to leave the French club. However, despite attracting interest from several teams, including Celtic, Parma, and Augsburg, no move materialized.
“I’ll be honest, I was very sad about how things turned out,” Mvogo admitted. “It wasn’t an easy time. I wanted to leave Lorient after relegation so that I could continue to compete and prove myself at the highest possible level. I knew it could be problematic if I played in the second division.”
Celtic’s Early Interest
Reports suggested that Celtic identified Mvogo as a potential replacement for Joe Hart, who retired at the end of the season. Initial talks reportedly took place as early as May, with speculation even claiming Mvogo had agreed to join Brendan Rodgers’ side. However, Celtic eventually opted to sign Kasper Schmeichel on a free transfer from Anderlecht, a move that effectively ended their pursuit of the Swiss goalkeeper.
Despite the setback, Mvogo confirmed that Celtic’s interest was genuine:
“Yes, there were a lot of offers. They all came relatively early. At this point, I wanted to take some time with the decision. I had no idea how difficult the market would be during the summer.”

One of the key obstacles to Mvogo’s move was the transfer fee attached to his contract with Lorient. Unlike Schmeichel, who was available as a free agent, Mvogo’s situation required interested clubs to pay a fee—something many teams were unwilling to do during a summer where financial caution prevailed.
“Many clubs then wanted free transfer goalies or those who could be borrowed,” he explained. “But I had a contract with Lorient, so a transfer fee would have been due.”

Ultimately, Mvogo remained at Lorient, where he now faces the challenge of helping his club regain its position in Ligue 1.
