West Ham United Set to Revive Interest in Burnley Captain Josh Brownhill
West Ham United is reconsidering a move for Burnley captain Josh Brownhill, nearly five years after he rejected the Hammers in favor of the Clarets. Brownhill’s impressive form and expiring contract have attracted attention from multiple Premier League clubs, including Fulham and Brighton.
Brownhill’s Contract Situation
Burnley faces a challenge in securing Brownhill’s long-term future, with his contract set to expire in the summer of 2025. The midfielder can sign a pre-contract agreement in January, leaving Burnley vulnerable to losing their influential captain.
Interest from Premier League Clubs
West Ham, Fulham, and Brighton are monitoring Brownhill’s situation, while Italian clubs Torino, Fiorentina, and Lazio are also prepared to offer contracts. Additionally, Rangers, Celtic, and Leeds United have expressed interest, although they may struggle to match the financial offers from other suitors.
Brownhill’s Previous Decision
In 2020, Brownhill turned down West Ham to join Burnley for £9 million. At the time, he cited Burnley’s stability in the Premier League as a key factor in his decision.
“My heart was set on Burnley,” Brownhill explained. “We were in talks for a couple of weeks, and I knew it was the right place. West Ham is a big club as well, but, in January, Burnley were a lot safer in the table. For me, it was about being in the Premier League, and Burnley just ticked every box.”
West Ham’s Midfield Struggles
The Hammers have struggled in central midfield, particularly during Julen Lopetegui’s tenure. Edson Alvarez and Guido Rodriguez have failed to impress, making Brownhill’s energy and mobility an attractive prospect.
Fulham’s Interest
Fulham has already raided Burnley once, signing Sander Berge in August. The Cottagers may return to Turf Moor to secure Brownhill’s services.
Burnley’s Dilemma
Burnley must decide whether to:
- Offer Brownhill an improved contract
- Sell him in January to avoid losing him for free
- Risk losing him to a pre-contract agreement
