Kalvin Phillips Tips Former Leeds Teammate Leif Davis for England Call-Up

Former Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips has endorsed his ex-teammate Leif Davis for an England call-up, hailing him as one of the Premier League’s top left-backs.

Phillips, currently on loan at Ipswich Town, knows what it takes to break into the England squad, having earned 31 caps himself. He believes Davis’s exceptional form warrants recognition.

“I was surprised he wasn’t called up to the last squad. Against Tottenham, I thought he was very good. He’s definitely one of the best in the league,” Phillips told the East Anglian Daily Times.

Davis’s rise to prominence is all the more remarkable given Leeds United sold him for a mere £1 million in 2022. His subsequent growth has been astonishing, with the 24-year-old now leading the Premier League in chances created by a defender, surpassing even Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Phillips attributes Davis’s success to his attacking prowess, suggesting he would thrive under Thomas Tuchel’s England management.

“I feel like there’s space for a natural attacking left-back, which is probably the way that Tuchel will want to play.”

Phillips is confident Davis will receive an England call-up soon but has avoided putting pressure on his teammate.

“I feel like I’m expecting the call-up for Leif more than he is expecting it. I’ve not really said it to him much, because I don’t want to make him feel pressurised, but I do feel like his time is going to come and when it comes I just want him to be able to grab it with both hands.”
