Martin O’Neill Weighs in on Kyogo Furuhashi’s Status as Celtic’s Best Striker Since Henrik Larsson

The debate surrounding Kyogo Furuhashi’s standing as Celtic’s best striker since Henrik Larsson has sparked intense discussion among fans and pundits alike. While some argue that Furuhashi’s impressive goal-scoring record warrants comparison to the legendary Larsson, others contend that such comparisons are unfair and unnecessary.

Former Celtic manager Martin O’Neill, who had the privilege of working with Larsson during his tenure at the club, has offered his thoughts on the matter. Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show, O’Neill acknowledged Furuhashi’s exceptional abilities while also emphasizing the vast gulf between his achievements and those of Larsson.

“That’s a really good point,” O’Neill said. “He’s an excellent player. And I suppose you would have to look at it. I can’t think offhand who might have been better than him at the time, but still a bit to go to be in the same league as Henrik Larsson. However, he’s done splendidly.”

O’Neill’s assessment of Furuhashi’s skills highlights the striker’s exceptional pace and ability to get in behind defenders, traits that have served him well in the Scottish Premiership. “Strangely enough, Mark and I on the way into the studio tonight, were talking about him, and very difficult to make an assessment of how good he would be,” O’Neill noted. “Let’s say he moved down to, let’s say, the Premier League or something. I think personally he would score a bag full of goals in the Championship, but he is quick and he does get in behind people, and that’s something that a lot of centre forwards, even in the Premier League, are reluctant to do.”

While O’Neill stops short of declaring Furuhashi the equal of Larsson, he does acknowledge the striker’s impressive achievements and suggests that he may be the best Celtic has seen since Larsson’s departure. “They don’t really want to get in behind, they want to come forward for the ball, perhaps because they can’t get in behind,” O’Neill observed. “But yeah, he’s been exceptional. I think he’s a really good player, and really I’d probably have to look at the history books between now and then. But yeah, he’s as good as anyone since Henrik.”
