Rangers Maintain Interest in Joe Gelhardt as January Transfer Window Approaches

Rangers are reportedly continuing their pursuit of Leeds United forward Joe Gelhardt as the January transfer window nears. Despite the Championship club’s reluctance to part ways with the 22-year-old in the summer, Rangers are said to be among a number of clubs keen to secure the striker on loan when the window reopens in just a few weeks.

A report from the Yorkshire Evening Post suggests that several teams—both in England and abroad—are interested in Gelhardt. The player’s availability has become a topic of conversation again, with as many as 10 clubs said to be in the running for his signature. Alongside Rangers, Championship sides such as Portsmouth, Stoke City, Plymouth Argyle, and Preston North End are reportedly monitoring the situation. Two Belgian clubs are also believed to be in contention.

Gelhardt, who has shown flashes of talent at Leeds, was previously the subject of interest from Celtic during last January’s transfer window. Though discussions took place, no move materialized at that time. Leeds manager Daniel Farke commented on Gelhardt’s role in the squad earlier this year, saying, “Joffy is a proper part of our group and has played several games and minutes, and at the moment the group is definitely not too big and at the moment I am not tempted to give any more players away. Now we want to keep more or less the group and strengthen the squad, we are not tempted to give players away, also not in offensive positions.”

Despite Farke’s insistence on retaining his squad, it appears that Gelhardt may seek a loan move in the coming months. The report from the Yorkshire Evening Post notes that there is a strong desire on the player’s part to secure more first-team action, which could make a January loan move an attractive proposition for him.

Rangers, who are actively scouting potential signings to bolster their attacking options, could provide the platform Gelhardt needs to further develop his game. With the club enduring a somewhat turbulent season under Philippe Clement, securing fresh attacking talent is likely to be a priority for the management team.
