Leeds United will face a tough test on Saturday afternoon as they travel to Ewood Park to take on Blackburn Rovers. A win for the Whites would see them return to the top of the Championship table, but regardless of the outcome, the feel-good factor is firmly in place among Daniel Farke’s squad.
Leeds have been in impressive form of late, winning three games in a row, including a 3-0 thrashing of Luton Town on Wednesday night. The win was Leeds’ tenth of the Championship season, and it also marked their tenth clean sheet.
Sunderland’s 1-0 loss to Sheffield United on Friday night means that Leeds now sit in second place, and they will need to beat Blackburn to return to the top of the table. However, Daniel Farke and Leeds lost twice to John Eustace’s Blackburn side last term.
One player who has been crucial to Leeds’ recent run of form is Joe Rothwell. The on-loan star has started nine league games in a row, giving the Whites an attacking impetus that they have rarely had during Farke’s tenure.
Rothwell’s Journey to Leeds
Rothwell joined Leeds on loan from Bournemouth, and he was made to wait by Farke. The midfielder came on as a substitute in each of Leeds’ first eight games, but an injury crisis has seen him start the next nine matches for the Whites.
Speaking to LUTV before Saturday’s clash against one of his old clubs, Rothwell revealed that he’s finally enjoying his football again at Leeds under Farke. Indeed, Farke recently praised Rothwell, saying that he is “proving his worth.”
“They’re really high [confidence levels],” Rothwell said. “I always knew that once I got a run of games and I get my rhythm back that I would be able to show what I’m all about. Thankfully, I’ve managed to do that.”
“As I say, with players coming back – we’re going to need everyone. But personally, I’ve really enjoyed playing and I’m thankful for the staff here for giving me that opportunity to enjoy my football again.”
Rothwell’s Importance Growing
Rothwell has almost played as much as he did last season, and the season before. The midfielder made the move to Bournemouth in June 2022 from today’s opponents Blackburn, but in the 18 months he has been available for Bournemouth, he’s only played 35 matches.
This season, Rothwell has completed 90 minutes on five occasions – the same amount he has done in the two seasons beforehand. His importance to the team is growing, but the question remains as to whether he will start when all four midfielders are fit.
Rothwell’s Future at Leeds
Rothwell’s future at Leeds is uncertain, but one thing is clear – he is enjoying his football again. The midfielder has been given a new lease on life at Leeds, and he is repaying the faith shown in him by Farke and the coaching staff.
