A Celtic exit appears imminent for young striker Daniel Cummings, who is reportedly on the verge of completing a move to West Ham United. The 18-year-old attacker has been courted by the Premier League club, and it is understood that a medical has been scheduled ahead of a pre-contract agreement that will come into effect this summer.
Cummings’ decision to leave Celtic comes despite advice from manager Brendan Rodgers, who had urged the young player to remain patient and trust the club’s development process. Rodgers had cited the example of Callum McGregor, who had chosen to stay with Celtic and eventually established himself as a key player.
However, it appears that Cummings has opted against following Rodgers’ advice. According to West Ham United insider ExWHUEmployee, the Hammers have scheduled a medical for Cummings, paving the way for his transfer to the Premier League club.
The news will come as a disappointment to Celtic fans, who had high hopes for Cummings’ development. The young striker had made his debut in the Champions League last month and had been impressing for the club’s ‘B’ team and in UEFA Youth League action.
Rodgers had spoken about Cummings’ situation during the winter transfer window, acknowledging that there was interest from another club but urging the young player to remain patient. “I believe there’s interest from another club for him, but that’s been the case with a lot of our young players,” Rodgers had said.
“You get to a certain age where they have their contract running out, and then they have a decision to make. Do they stay and follow the example of a Callum McGregor, for example, trust the club, be patient and knowing that you might not be right ready at 17, 18, but you have to be a special talent to be.”
It appears that Cummings has chosen not to follow Rodgers’ advice, opting instead for a move to West Ham United. The transfer is expected to be completed this summer, with the Hammers reportedly set to pay Celtic compensation for the talented young forward.
Cummings’ departure will leave Rodgers with a reduced pool of striking options, although the Celtic manager still has Adam Idah and Johnny Kenny at his disposal. Nevertheless, the loss of Cummings will be seen as a blow to Celtic’s development prospects, and the club will be hoping to retain more of its young talent in the future.
