D0ne DeaI — Top talented captain has slgned deal with Celtic that will keep him at Parkhead until 2029

Posted on April 17, 2026 by MrSport

Celtic have taken steps to secure the future of one of their emerging talents, with Hayden Borland putting pen to paper on a new deal that will keep him at the club until 2029.

The young defender has been a consistent figure for the B team this season and has also taken on the responsibility of wearing the captain’s armband.

Borland has featured regularly under Stephen McManus and Jonny Hayes, appearing week in, week out in the Lowland League.

That steady run of matches has helped him build a strong foundation, something not every academy player benefits from at this point in their development.

He originally signed his first professional contract in 2024, and this latest extension follows the progress he has made since then. It highlights both his involvement and the confidence the coaching staff have shown in him.

He also brings a level of international experience. Borland has progressed through Scotland’s youth ranks and was part of the under 19 qualifiers last month, adding another layer to his growth as a player.

While the new deal secures his place at the club for now, the next phase is what really matters. Competing in the Lowland League provides valuable minutes, but it does not always replicate the demands of first team football.

Celtic already have depth in defensive areas. Breaking into that squad means adapting to a faster pace and dealing with greater intensity, particularly when the team is under pressure and forced to defend open spaces.

That is where the next stage becomes important. Loan spells in the Championship have begun to offer young players a different challenge, with tougher opposition and a more physical style of play.

This contract gives Borland the time to continue his development. What happens next will depend on where he plays and how that experience brings him closer to making the step up to the first team.
