Arsenal CONFIRMS that star close to end of long injury lay-off, pictured in Wednesday training

Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny is back in action in training as he gets close to the end of a long injury lay-off, reports the club’s official website.

The 31-year-old has not been involved in action since he suffered a serious knee injury last season but he has been back in training for a while now.

However, Elneny has not made any of the matchday squads in 2023-24 as he is yet to fully recover.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta put some of the first-team squad through their paces at London Colney this afternoon, and the Egypt international was pictured running and flooring one of the youth players (Khayon Edwards).

Having Elneny available for selection will come as a much-needed boost for the Gunners as the games are starting to pile up.

Arsenal start their Champions League campaign this month when they host PSV Eindhoven on September 20, and a huge squad depth is needed if they want to challenge effectively across all four competitions this term.

With Thomas Partey still out for a couple of weeks, Ben White has been returned to right-back and Arsenal need more midfield options.

Elneny could be available for selection when the North Londoners travel to Goodison Park to face Everton on Sunday.

Should the trip to Merseyside come too early for the defensive midfielder, the next game, against Tottenham Hotspur, could be perfect for his return to the matchday squad.

Elneny signed a contract extension with Arsenal that would keep him at the club until the summer of 2024 in February and will be keen to start contributing to the first-team after recent injury woes.
