When it rains, it pours. After a nightmare international break off the pitch, Manchester United would have been desperate to get back to playing, but instead things got even worse as Erik ten Hag’s side sunk to a 3-1 defeat at home to Brighton.

United made a bright start on Rasmus Hojlund’s debut, but their former homegrown hero Danny Welbeck put Brighton ahead, helped by some awful United defending. Hojlund thought he had equalised, but the goal was ruled out, and then early in the second half more poor communication between Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof allowed Pascal Gross to double Brighton’s lead before substitute Joao Pedro rubbed salt into United’s wounds.

Hannibal Mejbri’s first goal for the club gave United some hope, but there was no great comeback and they fell to their first home defeat in over a year and their first Premier League defeat at Old Trafford since Brighton beat them 2-1 on the opening day of last season.

His passing was a bit off after his masterclass against Arsenal. Could have done more to keep out Joao Pedro’s goal but made good saves to prevent the scoreline getting even worse.

Diogo Dalot (6/10):

Gave United some purpose thrust down the right flank. Set up a good chance for Rashford which was blocked.

Victor Lindelof (5/10):

Made a feeble effort to prevent the opening goal. Recovered with some important blocks but then had more poor communication with Martinez for the second goal.

Lisandro Martinez (4/10):

One of his worst performances in a United shirt. Lacked his usual defensive authority and lost his footing for the second goal, allowing Gross to strike.

Sergio Reguilon (5/10):

Offered something going forward but crucially was nowhere to be seen when Brighton scored their opener, the move coming from his left flank.

United’s best player by a mile but grew ever more frustrated as the game went on. Hit the bar and set up Hojlund’s disallowed goal.
