‘I said from minute one’: Michael Owen says he always knew Arsenal player was ‘top-class’
Michael Owen thinks David Raya and Aaron Ramsdale will be rotated by Mikel Arteta during these coming months for Arsenal.
During the early weeks of the new Premier League season, the goalkeeping position at Arsenal has become a big talking point.
Aaron Ramsdale has been Arsenal’s number-one during the past few years, but it seems as though Mikel Arteta sees two number-one keepers at his club – it has been described as ‘the worst idea in football’.
On Sunday, the Arsenal boss handed David Raya his debut during their 1-0 win over Everton, with Michael Owen adding that he thinks the Spanish star is ‘top-class’ and he does ‘feel sorry’ for his counterpart, as he told Premier League Productions (18/09/23 at 10:55 pm).
A big week awaits Arsenal, both in Europe and in the Premier League.
At first, it’s a case of dealing with the Champions League returning to the club, with the Gunners set to lock horns with PSV at the Emirates, before that all-important Tottenham clash.

Ramsdale v Raya
“I think it’s fascinating,” said Owen. “I think we are going to learn about all these questions in the coming weeks.
“I think what you might see is Arteta pigeonholing one goalkeeper for a certain type of game, then another goalkeeper for a different type of game – the way he is talking, and his actions so far, would suggest that might be the way to go.
“I love this lad. I think Raya is a top-class goalkeeper. As soon as I saw him at Brentford, I said to anyone in here who would listen, ‘this lad is going to a top team’. I thought he was brilliant, right from minute one.
“But I do feel sorry for Ramsdale. He has done nothing wrong. All of a sudden now, after all of those great performances, his place is under pressure. I think they are both going to get an equal crack at the whip.”

Mikel Arteta wanted this
It needs to be remembered that Ramsdale was doing pretty well as Arsenal’s number one.
Arteta decided to bring Raya in from Brentford this summer because he clearly saw something in Ramsdale’s game that he either didn’t like or felt that he was lacking.
Therefore, having two number ones is what he wanted and now there is a lot of spotlight on that position, which is going to go either go very well or horribly wrong.
