“I will have to…..” Arsenal to abandon new Arteta plan vs Tottenham in North London Derby after Zinchenko admission.

Arsenal to abandon new Arteta plan vs Tottenham in North London Derby after Zinchenko admission.

Oleksandr Zinchenko explained to football.london the special passes played against Everton were by design but Arsenal are unlikely to repeat Mikel Arteta strategy for PSV and the North London Derby

Arsenal embark on their first hectic week of the new season with a return to Champions League football and, of course, the North London Derby on the weekend. Mikel Arteta needs to plan meticulously how to overcome two tough games.

Although fans might have had their eyes on Sevilla as the toughest game of the group, the poor form of the Spanish side in comparison to high-flying PSV might give people food for thought and it certainly will for Arteta. The tactics behind navigating the week in addition to the team selection will be critical to maximise output in both fixtures.

Arsenal finally ended a poor run at Everton after failing to win since 2017 with a victory at Goodison Park, many thanks to a stunning display from Oleksandr Zinchenko who shone throughout the game. He was a menace for the opposition with his unpredictable positioning, slick movement and quick passing.

However, it was a number of passes in-behind to the likes of Fabio Vieira and Leandro Trossard in both halves that caught the attention of onlookers. First-time lofted switches over the Toffees’ defensive line completely ambushed the home side and had both the Portuguese and Belgian attackers through on goal.

Speaking to Zinchenko after the game, football.london asked if this was something the Ukrainian would be adding more to his game. The full-back’s answer however provided far more context to what the plan behind the passes actually was.

“Well, to play against teams which are sitting so deep in the back you need to try to find these types of moments, to play the runs in behind,” Zinchenko said. “If you play too much short with each other, they’re going to jump and they’re going to use their counterattacks.

“It’s why it’s so important to make these types of movements like Fabio [Vieira] and Leo [Trossard] did in this game and obviously [Gabriel] Martinelli when he was on the field – from my side, not talking about the other [side]. That’s what we were trying to do today.”

Although this was brilliantly-executed by Zinchenko here, it’s unlikely that it will be as effective in the next two games. Both PSV and Tottenham play offensive systems under their new coaches this season which has seen 13 goals scored for the Dutch side and Ange Postecoglou recognised for his impact with a Manager of the Month away alongside James Maddison who won Player of the Month for August.

Arteta will have to use some slight tweaks to his philosophy but the foundation of possession dominance is sure to remain. A win in the derby and in the opening Champions League group game would be a massive boost.

The feeling of winning a derby is of course special but the Everton game brought with it a different sensation, perhaps relief. To end such a poor run after such a long period of unsuccessful attempts will be a massive boost.

Zinchenko certainly supported this by revealing the motivation the side had ahead of the game. He also told football.london of the importance of winning straight after the international break.

“Well I would say that first of all we didn’t win here for such a long period and finally we did it,” he said. “We’ve been quite motivated before the game, we knew it was going to be tough. I mean every single team in the Premier League know [how] tough it is to play here.

“Their crowd is pushing them until the last second, the way they play quite deep you know? They’re trying to use every single set piece and counterattacks.

“It’s so important to win and be back on track after [the] international break because from my experience I remember being in the team and coming back from [the] international break is always tough to play the first game because we have a lot of international players and everyone is playing in different systems in their national teams and it’s so important to get back on track straight away.”
