Stephen Welsh may be spending the season at Motherwell, but his latest contribution won’t go unnoticed back at Celtic.
It turned into a productive weekend for the Hoops. They took care of business against Falkirk, while Rangers stumbled at Ibrox against the Steelmen. Hearts did manage to beat Hibernian, but from a Celtic perspective, the bigger picture still shifted in their favour.
For Welsh, there was clearly an extra edge to it. He’s already enjoyed success against Rangers this season, scoring a winner in a previous meeting, but doing it at Ibrox carries a different weight. And he didn’t hold back at full-time.
Footage shared by Motherwell showed the centre-back right in the middle of the celebrations, shouting and roaring his way down the tunnel. It was raw, unfiltered—and, to some Celtic fans watching on, a reminder of where his loyalties still lie.
There’s even been some tongue-in-cheek talk that Martin O’Neill sent him out on loan as a “double agent” in January. It’s the kind of joke that only really lands when results go your way—and right now, they are.

Welsh wasn’t the only one playing a part. Jens Berthel Askou, who has been loosely linked with the Celtic job, was spotted at Parkhead for the win over Falkirk before heading to Ibrox and overseeing a result that could have a real say in how this title race unfolds.
It leaves Celtic in a strong position heading into the final stretch. The equation is straightforward enough—win the remaining games, and the title is theirs. But the margins are tight, and every result around them matters.
Next up is a trip to Easter Road, while Hearts and Rangers face each other. If those two cancel each other out and Celtic get the job done, they’ll have plenty of reason to look back on this weekend—and the role Welsh and Motherwell played in it.
