However, whilst the main focus is set to be on bringing in new additions to the squad, the 49ers are seemingly willing to let one Leeds star walk after just one season in West Yorkshire.
Leeds United set to allow Sebastiaan Bornauw to leave this summer
Sebastiaan Bornauw, 27, arrived at Leeds last summer from Wolfsburg in a deal worth £5.1million. The Belgian defender has been unable to establish himself in the starting XI since moving to United. He’s made just nine Premier League appearances to his name this season.
The latest report from Football Insider suggests that Leeds will not stand in Bornauw’s way should he want to leave this summer in pursuit of more regular first-team football.
With Farke switching to a system that requires three centre-backs, however, Bornauw is the only natural backup United currently have at their disposal. Although, James Justin has filled in there commendably at times this season.
Leeds are said to be keen not to leave themselves short in that department should Bornauw leave. Danilho Doekhi and Ladislav Krejci have been mentioned as potential targets for United this summer.
Leeds United should look to avoid Sebastiaan Bornauw transfer if possible
Am I saying that Bornauw should be the first name on the team sheet for Leeds next season? Certainly not.
But when the Belgian has been called upon this season, he has been very solid. Bornauw put in impressive performances against Liverpool, Everton and Manchester United.
If Bornauw is content to be a backup option again next season, then Leeds shouldn’t look to be moving the defender on.
We need to be realistic about where we are as a club. And, it is unlikely we will attract anyone better than Bornauw. They will have to be willing to be stuck behind Joe Rodon and Jaka Bijol in the pecking order.
Leeds are already short at centre back as it is, and if Bornauw is allowed to leave, he will need to be replaced. Plus, we all know we desperately need a left-footed centre half to compete with Pascal Struijk next season.
Unless Bornauw agitates for a move, we should keep the defender for another year. There are far bigger concerns in the current makeup of Leeds’ squad than signing another right-footed centre back. Someone who will likely end up being a back-up option anyway.
