Elliot Anderson scored late on against his former club Newcastle United to rescue a crucial point for Nottingham Forest to effectively secure their Premier League status.

Substitute Harvey Barnes put Newcastle ahead with 16 minutes of normal time remaining with his 16th goal of the season.

Anderson’s celebrations were muted after hurting himself upon scoring against his boyhood club, but it prompted wild celebrations from the home fans at the City Ground.

The Forest fans launched into a chant that will surely sting for Newcastle regarding their former academy player.

“Elliot Anderson, he’s one of our own,” chanted the Forest fans about the Geordie midfielder, who progressed through the ranks at Newcastle before being sold for £35million in 2024.

The home supporters then recognised Anderson’s North East roots by chanting ‘Geordie Maradona’, who was later named player of the match by the same moniker over the PA.

It ended a run of four straight defeats for Anderson against Newcastle since leaving the club.

The 23-year-old England international still showed his appreciation to the Newcastle supporters at full-time before swapping shirts with his former teammate Dan Burn.

Anderson is set to go to the World Cup this summer but is facing an uncertain future at club level, with Manchester City understood to make a bid to sign him.
