Sam Byram did not explicitly say he is leaving Leeds United this summer, but his latest comments strongly suggested he already knows his future lies elsewhere.
Speaking on Leeds’ official podcast, Byram admitted he still wants to play regularly after rebuilding his career physically over the last two years.
For a player who has hardly featured this season and whose contract expires in June, the message felt significant. Byram has enjoyed three wonderful years at Leeds, in what is his second spell in Yorkshire.
Byram sounded like a player preparing for life after Leeds
Byram’s comments were honest and difficult to ignore. He said: “Yeah, I think get the job done here. You know, I’m confident that, you know, we’ll see that out. For me, I still think I’ve got a few years in football.
“I’d like to, you know, play regularly if I can. It’s something off the back of before coming here, you know, I had a lot of years on the sideline with injuries,” Byram said this week.
“So I think for me to get myself in a position where it’s the best I’ve felt physically, I think, you know, that’s something that I really want to fulfill, play as much as I can.”
That does not sound like a player preparing to stay in a squad role at Elland Road. It sounds like someone who believes he still has enough left to become an important player elsewhere.
That is what makes Byram’s likely departure feel more respectful than disappointing. When Byram initially arrived on trial, there were genuine doubts over whether he could still contribute consistently.
During a pre-season friendly against Hearts, Leeds supporters even sang that “nobody else wants you”. Two years later, those chants look badly misplaced given the role Byram has played under Daniel Farke.

Byram’s second spell at Leeds was never supposed to become this important. Instead, he rebuilt both his fitness and reputation during two demanding Championship campaigns.
He made 39 appearances during the club’s title-winning season. His versatility and experience valuable assets for Farke. That was a remarkable turnaround for a player whose body once looked unlikely to cope with regular football again.
It is also why Leeds supporters should view this summer differently. Byram already achieved what many expected to be impossible when he returned to the club in 2023.

The difficult reality is that Leeds no longer appear capable of offering Byram the role he clearly wants. His own words centred around playing regularly, while his involvement this season has steadily reduced.
That leaves an obvious conclusion. Leeds should not stand in the way of a player who helped stabilise the squad during two intense Championship years and restored his career at Elland Road.
Byram’s second Leeds spell has already been a success story. If this is the end, it feels far more like the right time to move on than an unwanted goodbye.
