Leeds United in Contention for 22-Year-Old Defender Despite Premier League Interest
Former England midfielder Carlton Palmer believes Leeds United can sign Gent defender Archie Brown, despite interest from Premier League clubs Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, and Brentford. Palmer thinks Leeds’ Championship status could be an advantage in offering Brown regular football.
Brown’s Rise to Prominence
The 22-year-old left-back came through Derby County’s youth academy before moving to Lausanne-Sport in Switzerland in 2021. He then joined Gent in Belgium last summer, becoming a regular starter in the Jupiler Pro League and Europa Conference League. Brown’s impressive performances have earned him an England youth debut and attracted attention from top clubs.
Premier League Interest
Chelsea, Tottenham, West Ham, and Brentford are reportedly interested in signing Brown, but Palmer believes Leeds United’s ability to offer regular first-team football could give them an edge.
“Leeds United, Tottenham Hotspur, and West Ham United are among the clubs reportedly interested in Gent defender Archie Brown,” Palmer said. “The problem that Leeds United will have is that they’ll have to be in the Premier League to get him, so it’s unlikely that they’ll get him in the January transfer window.”
Advantage Leeds
However, Palmer thinks Leeds’ Championship status could be beneficial in signing Brown. “If the player is sensible, even if you want to go and play in a Premier League side, you look at the type of clubs interested in signing you, and you have to wonder whether you’ll go straight into the side and play.”
Palmer emphasized that Brown will prioritize playing regularly, having already experienced limited game time at Derby County. “He’ll have more chance of playing in Leeds United’s first-team than he would with Tottenham, West Ham, and Chelsea.”
Why Leeds Makes Sense
An Elland Road switch could be ideal for Brown, allowing him to develop as a regular starter under Daniel Farke. Brown’s best bet at becoming a Premier League starter might be joining Leeds and winning promotion with them.
Brown’s Stats
This season, Brown has:
- Appeared in 14 Jupiler Pro League games
- Scored one goal
- Provided two assists
- Created 13 chances
- Maintained a 75% pass accuracy
- Won 66.7% of tackles
- Won 54.5% of duels
- Won 65.1% of aerial duels
Verdict
Leeds United’s interest in Archie Brown is genuine, and their Championship status could prove advantageous. Offering Brown regular football and the chance to develop under Farke could sway his decision.
While Premier League clubs are circling, Brown’s priority should be playing regularly. Leeds United’s prospects of promotion and Brown’s potential for growth make Elland Road an attractive destination.
